In Denver's historic Baker district, this 1890 Victorian had a long history of additions and conversions. When our clients moved in with plans for a second child, the upstairs still reflected its past as a rented apartment—an oversized living room and only one true bedroom. We transformed the floor into a family-friendly layout, carving out a defined hallway with two well-proportioned bedrooms and a nursery that will later be used as an at-home office.
Historic millwork, hardware, and colors reconnect the home to its Victorian roots, making the new spaces feel original to the house. The six existing double-hung windows were carefully restored to their historic profiles, and the glazing was upgraded to tempered glass for improved safety. These period details are balanced with subtle contemporary conveniences for everyday living, including updated lighting, acoustic wall partitions, and a motorized shade for the oversized skylight to help control heat and glare from the strong western sun.
